One day, I got a flat tire, so I went to the place where I could fix it. I’ve heard that it was near my house. And I found that the place was where old people were fixing and recycling bicycles by hand work. Seeing this scene, I felt myself slipping back in time to the Showa era that was several decades ago in Japan. The old people take bicycles that are decided to discard by city government and recycle them.
One old man there said that they made a new bicycle from those scrapped bicycles. Actually, they used to have completely different jobs. But after they retired, they found a pleasure in making a new bicycle by recycling. They like their new job and are very proud of it. They don’t do that just for money.
When I asked him how he thought about his new jobs, he said that he enjoyed communicating and making friends in his community. He likes seeing their smiles. That makes him work hard and enjoy himself as well.
There are so many material goods in Japan and other advanced countries. I think it has a great meaning to learn something important throughout their work, life and recycle. And also I would be happy if I could tell about their lives and let you know take care about what we have.
Finally, I really do appreciate the chance to know and stay with them and thank them for their corporation to make a film spending a couple of months.
